Friday, February 28, 2003Dartmouth one point away from first round byeDartmouth took care of Rensselaer easily tonight in Troy, NY beating the Engineers 7-1. The reunited line of Hugh Jessiman, Mike Ouellette, and Lee Stempniak accounted for 5 of Dartmouth's goals. Ouellette had a hat trick, Stempniak had a 5 point night with a goal and four assists, while Jessiman added a goal and three assists himself. Nick Boucher stopped 34 of 35 shots to earn the win.The win combined with Brown's tie moved Dartmouth within a point of clinching fourth place and a first round bye in the conference playoffs. If Dartmouth beats or ties Union, they will host the best-of-3 quarterfinals in 2 weeks (March 14th-16th). If Dartmouth defeats Union and Yale loses to Cornell, Dartmouth will finish ahead of the Elis as well and claim the #3 seed. If Dartmouth loses to Union, they will finish either 5th or 6th and host the 1st round series against either Princeton or Rensselaer next weekend (March 7th-9th), depending on the outcome of the Brown game. Interesting timing, because it was five years ago, to the day, that I wrote the piece that inspired XML-RPC and SOAP. "It's RPC over HTTP via XML. I believe it's the next protocol for runtimes."Mr. Winer is widely regarded as an Internet luminary, was an early contributor to Wired (before it became a Fast Company clone), founded Userland Software, writes Scripting News daily, and is a Berkman Fellow at the Harvard Law School. Clint Hendler of FreeDartmouth found this out today and described his discovery with this delightful riddle:"What do a crumpled up tie, a golf bag, an antique dartmouth pennant, and a hastily cleared out office have in common?" Well, Stefan and I just stumbled upon this and offered Hendler these responses. They are posted below for your enjoyment. Stefan: Uh...the first three things are in the now-vacated Review office, and the fourth thing IS the now-vacated Review office. However, before you begin rejoicing, our new offices are located on the ground floor of Zeta Psi. And the office, I assure you, was not "hastily cleared out" -- it took about 12 hours and a lot of personpower (girls even helped, although they were weak and inefficient). I don't imagine your offices would take as long to empty out, having not yet accumulated so much fine computing equipment or heavy-duty file cabinets -- unless, of course, you had to move out all the stuff belonging to the Jacko, Word Magazine, the Stonefence Review, etc. Ahh, how sweet it is to have a room of one's own... Larry: Don't take the the sparkling cider off ice yet. So, what do all these have in common? Well, the Review office has moved and the three items you mention have yet to be moved, but they will be shortly. And, "hastily?" The move was done over two days, as moves generally are not long-term processes. To further assuage your curiosities, I invite you to peer through the windows of 8 Webster. There you will find all of our equipment nestled comfortably in spacious quarters. Full post and comments below the fold. Posted by J. WE NEED YOU TO HELP STOP THIS NOMINATION. Rep. Gary Daniels, who led the fight against the creation of the Commission in 1997, said during debate over the commission that homosexuality is unnatural, immoral, unhealthy and "primarily responsible for the spread of AIDS." After being nominated by Benson last week, Daniels again maintained that sexual orientation should not be protected under law, saying "sexual orientation is not a constitutional right." (Concord Monitor, 2/25/03) HOW CAN YOU STOP THIS RADICAL, ANTI-GAY ACTIVIST FROM ROLLING BACK CIVIL RIGHTS AND EQUAL PROTECTION UNDER THE LAW? The five member Executive Council will vote on this nomination on Wednesday, March 5th. Two Councilors have already expressed concern about Daniels. Take a minute to call and email your councilor and tell them you are strongly opposed to this nomination. Don't assume someone else will make the call - we need each and every voice to stop this nomination. Lee Stempniak scored his first goal since January by knocking a Brian Van Abel rebound over a fallen netminder to tie the game at two. That set the stage for Mike Ouellette and Hugh Jessiman. As the clock wound under a minute to play in regulation and the game appeared to be heading to overtime, the duo skated in on a two on one break. Jessiman sent a pass to the front of the net that Ouellette knocked over Yann Danis' pads to light the lamp and send the crowd of over 3900 into a frenzy.Dartmouth dominated the play for most of the game, but Brown goalie Yann Danis stopped 45 of 48 shots to give Brown a chance to steal the game. Nick Boucher made 21 saves for Dartmouth. Trevor Byrne got the game's lone power play goal, as he rocketed a wrister off the far post and into the net to tie the game at one in the 2nd period. Dartmouth finishes the home schedule with a record of 12-3-0 at Thompson Arena this year. Dartmouth finished 1-4 with the man advantage, while Brown went 0-3 on the PP. With the win, Dartmouth improved to 15-11-1 (11-9-0), re-enters a tie for fourth place with Brown, and can finish no worse than a tie for 7th in the conference with Colgate and thus is guaranteed home ice in the first round of the playoffs in two weeks. Dartmouth hits the road for the final weekend of the year to take on RPI on Friday and Union on Saturday. If Dartmouth sweeps and picks up two wins, they would be assured of fourth place and a first round bye in the ECAC playoffs since they hold the tiebreaker over Brown. It will not be easy though, since the team is only 3-8-0 on the road this year thus far (the tie came in a neutral site game vs. UNH).
